Tres tuning: string by string

Tres tuning, In C (G C E): G4 C4 E4. The Cuban tres has six strings in three pairs and two tunings players use today: in C, G C E, and a whole tone up in D, A D F♯, which many treseros, especially in eastern Cuba, prefer. Pick yours on the switch; the tuner asks for the three pairs from the G or A down to the E or F♯.

The first pair, G (or A), is an octave pair: one string an octave below the other, while the C pair is a unison. The tuner folds octaves, so both strings of that first pair tune against the same note; listen for the beating to stop, not for the two to sound alike. Some players put the E pair in octaves too.

The notes you tuned go into Brumm as a short melody over a beat.
